My husband and I never had wedding rings to take on or off. Yes, we are legally married and no its NOT an open marriage. We are not jewelry people. Been together 35 years and still going strong.
Now that I think about it, my engagement ring had a Tiffany setting, with the diamond sitting very high. Being a normal, active person, the diamond became loose & I nearly lost it. I had it reset in a lower setting, doesn't show off the stone as well but keeps it safe in place.
When you're married for decades, you don't even notice the rings anymore, it's just part of you, like your toe or something.

Yeah, mine is sorta like my toe, too. True, and made me laugh.
So just trying on the prospective ring once in the store already gave you a reaction?
You don't want to get your current one resized? Mine needs to be, but I can get away w/ still wearing it on my ring finger w/o it actually falling off for the most part. But, sometimes, it feels looser than other times, so in that case, I'll wear it on my middle finger.
We told the salesperson (Whom I later found out was the manager) that I had to get one that was 14k gold. Anything less would give me an allergic reaction. So what did she do? In addition to showing me 14k rings, she also showed me 10k ones. Thinking that the one I tried on and liked was 14k, I almost bought it. Thankfully, my husband thought to ask if it was 14k. Idiot salesperson said "no". Had I bought the ring and wore it right away for a few hours, I would have had an allergic reaction. Then she tried to sell me one of those items (I forget the exact name) that I could put on my ring to keep it from falling off. So, once again, I asked if it was 14k. She said "no".
I hadn't thought about looking into getting it resized. That's a good suggestion. Also, I'll now try it to see if it fits on my middle finger. Thank you for that suggestion!
I also have an allergy to lower-karat gold. My skin turns red and itchy. My wedding band is a plain 18K gold band. It is very comfortable, and it never comes off except that it occasionally slips out when I'm in the shower with soapy hands. I bought it to replace a bezel-set diamond band that was pretty, but not especially comfortable. I would take that one off every night.
My husband leaves his wedding band off except when we're going out. That's OK with me. He's 83, so I'm not too worried about girls chasing after him.
I put mine on after I get dressed and take them off when I go to bed. I can’t sleep with any jewelry on. My husband wears his 24/7.
