My cholesterol has always been borderline. Recent bloodwork showed my LDL at 146. Total cholesterol was 230. Triglycerides 153. All other levels were within norms. My diet is pretty solid and I workout regularly. Doc suggested 10mg Lipitor. Thoughts?

Read up on the dangers of statins and the shakey evidence showing that cholsterol does anything regarding heart disease.

Paul Mason and Doctor David Dimond are a good place to start on You tube. There is also the book, the clot thickens" by Malcom Kendrick.

Also if you haven't gotten one, get a CAC. Coronary Calcium Scan. That will tell you your actual risk. Mine was zero. My cholesterol has been high my entire life.

There is a you tube movie called the widowmaker that goes over it.

Suggestion:

If you're not already doing so you could limit your consumption of red meat, processed meats, cheese and eggs and see if that just might lower your LDL.

It did for me.

I understand statins may be good in reducing mortality for those who have already had a heart attack, but not so good for those who haven't...and the side effects can be wicked.

Me, I'd try lifestyle changes esp. diet before considering statins.

Have you ever heard of the great cholesterol paradox?

Google it, then make up your own mind.

It basically says that folks with higher cholesterol live longer.

My friend got macular degeneration from statins. Now he is blind.

Duane Graveline wrote a very interesting book about this topic and it is available on Amazon.

Fish oil may help lower triglycerides.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-sup...l/art-20364810

"There's strong evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can significantly reduce blood triglyceride levels."

https://www.nordic.com/why-omega-3s/

Here some info from my previous posts on how to reduce cholesterol naturally.

Plant sterols also are reported to help with cholesterol.

There are several supplements that will help with cholesterol. My sister-in-law took Citrus Bergamot and dropped her total cholesterol from 225 to 175 in 6 months. She took the Bergamot supplement from Herbal Powers. Jarrow also has a Bergamot product.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6497409/

"The results of five different clinical trials (Table 1) using bergamot in various forms suggest the polyphenol fraction can lower LDL-C and total cholesterol."

Bergamot produces excellent results according to this study.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6497409/

Bergamot juice was found to reduce cholesterol (29.27%), triglycerides (46.12%), and LDL (51.72%) and an increase in HDL (27.61%) levels versus hypercholesterolemic controls

Aronia berries also help. Eclectic Institute makes an Aronia supplement.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31237052/

"Dose-response analysis demonstrated a significant reduction in triglyceride levels when dose of Aronia was increased to 300 mg/day. In conclusion, the results demonstrated a significant increase in HDL and reduction in total cholesterol and LDL among patients supplementing with Aronia."

Amla fruit also reduces cholesterol. There are several different Amla supplements available.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3326920/

"Treatment with Amla for 42 days produced significant decrease in the mean levels of TC (P<0.0001), LDL (P<0.0001), VLDL, and triglycerides (P<0.0002), and a significant increase in HDL (P<0.0002) levels [Figure 1]."

Walnuts are also one of the best foods for reducing cholesterol. An easy way to eat walnuts is Artisana Walnut Butter.

My triglycerides and bad cholesterol have been high even w/ meds, so I finally opted for a statin. You should read up on them before you try one because they're not all the same. I have tinnitus, and all of them but Rosuvastatin are bad news for that. The first two doctors I saw wanted to put me on different statins and I refused. Finally, my third doctor OK'd it. It's been a learning experience!

This stuff really messed w/ my stomach and bowels. Spent a LOT of time in the bathroom. But I had read up on this, and if you can tolerate it for a month or two your body adapts. Now in my 2nd month things have calmed down considerably, and I'm looking forward to having my labs down to see if it's getting my blood levels down to where they should be.

I used to gather medical information for drug studies, so I know better than to blindly trust a doctor. I fact check every study known to man or beast before I'll try a new drug. Doctors don't do this, they just prescribe something, and who knows? We have to take control of our health issues and not take stuff we shouldn't be taking. I have no trouble firing a doctor and looking elsewhere because, quite frankly, the good ones are pretty rare, and the mediocre ones are dangerous.

Many doctors on the internet are there because they know they can make more money selling books, supplements, and youtube channel subscriptions than they can being actual doctors. OR - they were actual doctors and had their credentials pulled. Or, they never had credentials in the first place, and they know people will buy whatever fables they make up if they present it right.

My doctor told me my cholesterol is a little high, but expected for a woman my age (I'm 62), and if I reduce my carb intake and don't gain weight, I should be fine. My triglycerides are inconsistent. Sometimes they're a little high, but usually they're right in the middle of the "normal" window.

The doctor also said if I didn't reduce my carb intake, gained weight, and my cholesterol continued to go up, he'd need to put me on a statin. So - I'm trying. Eating more salads, less bread, fewer fried foods, more baked proteins and raw or steamed vegetables with more seasoning and less sauce.

We'll see how it goes when I get my next physical.
