Less than 1/1000000 odds Re Macy’s
the spot next to REI likely becomes a supermarket, Trader Joe’s would be good there.
Yeah I suspect Columbiana followed by Richland being potential options simply because they would be surrounded by other high destination retail. Columbiana has the edge because of the larger mall, interstate, and access to high income populations around Lake Murray and Lexington County.
The redevelopment of Richland Mall gives me hope that my other childhood fav.. Dutch Square may experience a similar opportunity
The plans for Richland Mall don't seem to support another large department store like Macy's. The plans showed Belk moving into the rehabed Parisian building and the rest of the mall torn down after that move and replaced with a large supermarket and small stores and restaurants to go along with the apartments.
Macy's would seem more likely for the Harbison area or possibly Sandhill even though they don't seem to be building full line stores these days. At the least it looks like either of those areas would support a Macy's Backstage (Macy's version of Nordstrom Rack) or a smaller Market by Macy's like the one in McDonough Ga. Those seem to be the two formats they are moving forward with instead of large mall department stores.

Yeah.. I dont see how the Macys at Columbia Place stays in business. Seems like downsizing to one of those models would make sense
Seems like Macy's would want to keep a large full size store since it is the only location in the Midlands and one of only two in SC. But Belk seems to dominate, and there is also competition from Dillard's. The Market by Macy's seems to be a smaller suburban concept, whereas there are several larger full service stores around Atlanta.
But too bad Columbia Mall cannot be revitalized. The layout and design is very nice, and nice large skylights.
Belk is closing it's Richland Mall location next month to focus on its other two Columbia locations. It's not clear from this story if they will return to the former Parisian building after the redevelopment. The headline states they are not returning.
I wonder if Dead Malls.com will remove Richland Mall from its registry once this project is completed? There used to be some pretty damning videos on line of people walking through and showing leaks into buckets and walking around in places that were certainly off limits to show how far the place had fallen off even though it was still open.

Be careful, deadmalls.com is FULL of malware and redirects. Please watch out.
There are a few Youtube urban explorer videos of Richland Mall (particularly the molding former Dillard's) that will live on forever.
