We are planning to relocate to Charlottesville once our home is sold in FL. We will be visiting in June but would like some prior knowledge to help make our time worthwhile. We would like to know the best areas to live as active retirees with dogs. We would like a single story home which we realize may be difficult. We don't want a retirement community per se but would like to have people with like interests and just a good mix. Any suggestions as to where to look would be appreciated. Price range up to 500K. Thanks!

I lived in Charlottesville for 2 1/2 years up until the end of 2005. I am 30, not a retiree, so take what I say with a grain of salt. The North part of Charlottesville (Forest Lakes area) right off of Rte. 29 has nice houses, is quiet, but is still close to everything. I own a house in that area and my neighbors were a nice mix of retirees and married couples with children. They were all very friendly. I'm not sure how many single level houses are there, though.

I'd say head out into surrounding Albemarle County and see what you can find.... I used to live in Earlysville which was very peaceful and yet close enough to town to make it convenient. Also check out Free Union (gets a little further out, but nice).... Other areas that I liked include Ivy and Crozet.... Rural but close to town.

I'm also looking at retiring in the C'ville area. I like Lake Monticello, which is not age-restricted. Lots of ranch houses on one-third to one-half acre lots under $300K.

I am liking Lake Monticello more and more. It has golf, boating, fishing and swimming, tennis and other recreation. There is a new commercial health club (Health Nutz) outside the gates with an indoor swimming pool. There are two doctors offices within Lake Monticello. The nearest hospitals are in C'ville, about 16.5 miles away.
