I had been thinking of moving to Western NC, my family is from NC and most still live there. However, being that my immediate family was military I was raised in CA. Anyhow, I like Asheville, NC, but teaching jobs are limited. Somebody recommended Charlottesville, so I have a few questions:

-Humidity is not might friend, hence why I was looking at Western NC, how is it in Charlottesville?

-Being a college town, is it more progressive? Can I fit in without being a church goer?

-Mountains, lakes, etc. nearby for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, camping?

-Any asians? Food, stores, people? My GF is asian and want to try to convince her on a move.

Within a half-hour of all that you mention..... Very cool in that respect.

Not devoid of Asians, but not like California or DC, if that's what you're looking for...... I mean, Charlottesville doesn't have a "China Town" section if that's what you're after...

Charlottesville VA is a beautiful, progressive, diverse town. There is a large Asian population there. I worked for Charlottesville DSS for four years and worked with the demographics.

I say go to Asheville instead. Cost of living in Charlottesville is ridiculous, very snooty town. Asheville is bigger by 30,000 population. Asheville 70,000 vs Charlottesville's 40,000. Lack of many resources and gentrification like crazy. As far as diversity? Only at UVA, so I would go for Asheville, research and go visit.

I disagree. Charlottesville is not all that snooty. Asheville has even more northeast transplants than Charlottesville does so its on the liberal side.

Charlottesville is near the blue ridge so its a tad cooler than other areas of the state.

Oh I can't disagree as far as "snooty" is concerned, but it all depends on the social circle you run with.... UVA students in general are pretty "snooty", but whatever...

I know both places and many people from both places. If I had a choice, I'd choose Charlottesville as it has more to offer, in general. UVA is an international attractor for a diverse population, too.

To me, Asheville is more artsy, Charlottesville is more collegiate and business-oriented. Charlottesville also has an excellent medical research center, worthy of note.

Look at a map and check out the 60 mile radius. Which places offers you more sites of personal interest to explore?

UVA students are snooty? HA!

The only snootyness is occassionaly found in the old time residents. Old Virginia money, etc.

Most UVA students are too busy getting drunk or partying to be snooty.

C-ville has a great live music scene, so it is artsy to a degree. I honestly, haven't been to Asheville. I do have some friends who lived there for several years.

Yep, I suppose it is esp. when I think about my own experiences. A majority of the people I know there are through the arts. When I had my own business, I free-lanced as a teacher there --all art-related classes. But Charlottesville is diverse enough that I don't think of it first as an artsy place.
