I have a large Maintenon cat and she will not let me brush her! I usually take her to the vets groomer twice a year, but it is so expensive. I will clip her myself, but she needs to be calmed down a bit. She is a big strong cat and is not happy to even let me brush her. Any hints?

Can a 10mg dose of benadryl kill a 10 to 13 pound cat?

Not likely. 1mg/lb is a recommended dose.

I recommend a treat called "Quiet Moments". It has tryptophan and melatonin in it. Takes about 20-30 mins to kick in but it brings my cat from agitated and yowling to mellow and happy.

Hello: I've been feeding a stray cat for the past 6 years. I names her "Orea." (She's black and white.) She lives in my backyard. I can't keep her indoors because I'm highly allergic (asthmatic). I bought a pet house, pet warmer and cushions for her to keep her warm during the harsh winter months. In the spring and summer she doesn't go into her house because I guess it's too warm. Anyway, you might say she's mine. I've grown to love her. My problem is this -- I sold my house and I expect to be moving from NJ to NC around July. I'd like to take her with me but I'd need to trap her, put her in a pet carrier and travel 12 hrs. to NC. What can I give her to trap her without harming her? Also, when I get there I'll have to put her outside again like I did all the years in NJ. Do you think it's best for me to leave her behind and hope that the new owners will take care of her? I'm heartbroken because the neighborhood I lived in is all she knows. I feel that if I take her to NC, it may do her more harm than good. Can someone please advise me on what you think would be the best thing I can do for her? Thank you.

I would start a new thread so you'll get more responses.

Is she tame enough to pet or truly feral? If the former, maybe there is a rescue you could work with to find a home for her before you leave.

If not, I would make call a feral cat rescue or a group that does TNR (trap neuter release) in your area and see what they recommend.

I doubt the new owners would take care of her. Very few people want to care for a feral cat. I would lean toward taking her with you but I'm no expert.

Thank you for taking care of her and being concerned about what will happen to you when you leave.

Good luck.

Default "Orea" (feral cat) - My move to NC

Thank you Rowan for your response. I trapped Orea after she had a litter of kittens 6 yrs ago when she came to me. I then found homes for all her kittens. I tried trapping her recently but she won't go near the cage. I will check with my neighborhood shelters to see if they could trap her and find a good home for her. Thanks again. Lillian
