Tahquitz Canyon


Tahquitz Canyon is an amazing canyon filled with a diverse ecosystem. Much of Palm Springs, California is desert; however, Tahquitz Canyon has much more such as vibrant landscape, various plants and animal life. In the canyon one can find Apricot Globemallow, Beavertail Cactus, Brittlebrush, California Red Barrel Cactus, Creosote Bush, Costa Hummingbird, Cudweed, Desert Apricot, and many other flowers and birds.

Tahquitz Canyon is a park, with admission. Adults are $12.50 and children can enter for $6. Children are anyone under 12. Group rates are set up differently based on the number of people in a group. There are ranger led hikes which last for 2.5 hours and are two miles roundtrip. Departure times are 8am, 10am, 12pm, and 2pm. There are also self guided hikes one can take from the visitor center. Hiking hours are 7:30am to 3:30pm. The park is open until 5pm.

There is a Legend of Tahquitz, which says Tahquitz was the first shaman created by Mukat. Tahquitz had great power that he used for good. He then became a guardian spirit, but he eventually used his power to harm, thus he was banished into the canyon in the San Jacinto Mountains and he made a secret cave.
