Point Dume State Beach and Preserve

This beautiful, peaceful beach and preserve offers visitors an opportunity to participate in surfing, swimming, although the water is very cold, scuba diving and seasonal fishing. Many visitors come to this somewhat secluded beach between December and March when the California gray whales are migrating. Many others access the beach for its incredible view of the Santa Monica Bay, Santa Monica Mountains, and, on a clear day, Catalina Island. From the main highway near Malibu, Westward Beach Road takes travelers to an access point that can accommodate up to six vehicles. Additional fee parking can be found farther down the beach on Westward Beach Rd. A gradual ascending trail leads visitors to a coastal bluff sand dune. Please stay on the trail to help preserve the distinctive accumulation of sand. A boardwalk leads to a viewing platform just below the summit. A stairway on the eastern side of the bluff allows access to the beach area below. The beach has striking cliffs, clean water and enough surf to attract energetic surfers during the warmer months. There are no lifeguards or bathroom facilities in the area. There is a small grocery store with public bathrooms a short drive from the beach where picnic supplies can also be obtained. Visitors should be aware that temperatures can vary greatly along the beach. It is suggested that guests bring along a light to medium weight jacket to ward off the chill.
