Mar 22nd 1962 I landed a flamed out F-100 D on runway 22 at Bicycle Lake. I was leading a flight of four F-100s out of George AFB. During an air to air gunnery flight over Leach Lake My engine flamed out. I had briefed the flight if we had a dire emergency Bicycle was 20 miles South. The flame out approach and landing was successful with no damage to the aircraft. Cause of the flameout was failure of the engine driven fuel pump that supplied fuel to both the normal and emergency systems. Two Army Officers picked me up in a jeep and took me to their club where we had a beer. The aircraft's engine was replaced. Fuel was reduced to lighten the aircraft and it was flown off of the lakebed. The fiftieth anniversary was this year. An event I will always remember.
