Description: Yukon is located to the west of Oklahoma City with easy access to I-40 and the John Kilpatrick Turnpike. Route 66 runs through the heart of town. Yukon was established in 1891 when A. N. Spencer, a cattleman turned railroad builder, was building a rail line from El Reno, Oklahoma, to Arkansas. There were no towns between El Reno and Oklahoma City, so Spencer bought some land and with his brother, L .M. Spencer, who owned a real estate agency, they starting developing the area.Today, Yukon has a population of 25,000 and covers an area of 26 square miles. Its boundaries run from Wilshire on the north side, to Northwest 10th on the south, Sara Road on the east, and Gregory Road on the west. Yukon is the home of country-music-superstar Garth Brooks, actor Dale Robertson, and the Oklahoma Czech Capital. Every year in Oct hundreds of people of Czechoslovakian descent come to Yukon to celebrate their customs, heritage, and culture.Today the town is experiencing an economic upturn. New businesses are coming to the area. The average income is around $58,000. The city tax rate of 4.35 percent plus Oklahoma state tax of 4.5 percent makes the total rate 8.85 percent. The governing body consists of a mayor and five council members.
