Description: The only professional dance company in New Mexico, the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet started in 1996 and has slowly grown. Ballet classes are offered for children and adults, including intensive training programs each summer. The students also participate with professional dancers in an annual holiday performance of The Nutcracker, presented by the Aspen Ballet. The company, with administrative headquarters in Aspen, Colorado, presents three productions each season, from August through March. The 2009 programs included A Gala Evening of Stars, Parsons Dance, and Mixed Repertory, premiering the humorous Sechs Tänze by Jiri Kylian. All performances are at the Lensic Performing Arts Center.

Description: The Institute for Spanish Arts, the nonprofit organization that Benítez co-directs with her husband, Cecilio, presents workshops and classes in Spanish dance and music for adults and children. Offerings include flamenco, tango, cajon, martinete, bata de cola, and alegrias. Youngsters in Flamenco’s Next Generation dance troupe perform on the Plaza stage during Fiesta and Spanish Market and in the Benitez Theater at the Lodge at Santa Fe on Sunday matinees.

Description: Founded in 2001, Moving People is the only home-based contemporary dance theater in Santa Fe. The spring Louder Than Words performance and holiday Swingin’ Suites are popular annual events. The dance school also puts on an annual summer dance festival with specially choreographed performances at the Lensic Theater and a two-week dance intensive for serious students.

Description: Although privately owned and operated, this venue serves as an educational, cross-cultural meeting ground through the guise of classes, workshops, dances, and performances offered at modest prices—and sometimes free. Particularly popular are Saturday morning African dance and drumming classes, which have attracted scores of enthusiasts for years, and regular yoga classes. Check local listings for one-time-only appearances by World Beat performers and members of Santa Fe’s burgeoning marimba community. The space is large, with one of the finest hardwood dance floors in town, and located in the fast-emerging Railyard Park opposite the tracks from the new farmers’ market.

Description: The Center for Contemporary Arts’ Cinematheque is regularly voted Santa Fe’s Favorite Art Film Theater in the annual Reporter’s Reader’s Poll and screens some of the world’s best movies, including classic black-and-white films, beautiful foreign films, and mind-blowing documentaries. Recent offerings include films from Africa, China, Israel, Iran, India, France, and Britain. Popular series include the annual Film Noir festival in July and the Santa Fe Film Festival in late November. The theater sells fresh popcorn with a variety of interesting seasonings, including curry, Parmesan cheese, and nutritional yeast. A new film opens every Friday and runs at least one week. Call for a schedule and show times or check the Web site. CCA has plenty of parking.

Description: This Santa Fe-based organization works to nurture the growing literary and publishing scene throughout New Mexico. In recent years many small presses publishing fine works by local writers have emerged, tested their dreams against reality, and survived in pleasingly strong numbers. NMBA publishes a lively newsletter, Libro Monthly, with plenty of news from writers and publishers in Santa Fe, in New Mexico, and even out of state. The group hosts monthly luncheons for publishers, writers, and readers. It also publishes New Mexico’s Book World: A Resource Guide, a directory of book people and services in the state.
