Description: Durham’s 10,000-square-foot concrete skate park opened downtown in late 2009. It includes three sets of seven-step stairs, launch boxes, a quarter pipe, a street clam, and an eight-inch trog bowl. Helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads are required, and no bicycles are allowed. The park is open dusk to dawn. Admission is free. No concession stand or pro-shop is associated with the park, but Ujamaa Boardhouse skate shop is nearby at 719 North Mangum Street.

Description: Durham operates two dog parks, and requires pet owners to obtain an admission tag for each dog from the city. Tags cost between $15 and $22 per dog, depending on whether the pet owner is a city resident. Pet owners can register by mail or in person at the Durham Parks and Recreation Department at 400 Cleveland St. Each dog park includes separate areas for large and small dogs. No dogs younger than three months old are allowed.

Description: In west Durham south of Falls Lake and north of I-540, Falls Village will one day be surrounded by the subdivisions planned to encircle it. For now it’s a quiet haven for golfers and wildlife that’s a short drive from I-40 and I-85. The 7,072-yard, par-72 course is straightforward but difficult, surrounded by thick stands of hardwood and dotted with 48 white sand bunkers. The clubhouse has a pro shop and bar that serves a casual menu. Private lessons are available. Green fees range from $40 to $59.

Description: Hillandale is the Triangle’s oldest course and one of its best regarded. Donald Ross designed the original layout in 1911, but the course got a makeover from George Cobb when it was relocated in 1960. The 6,339-yard, par-71 course is in the middle of residential Durham. It features water hazards on nine holes. Its pro shop ranks among the best in the country with an extensive inventory. Pros offer private lessons and clinics and the course hosts many tournaments and charity events. Rates are $20 to $39.

Description: At Duke you can take advantage of a highly educated staff of exercise physiologists, physical therapists, health psychologists, and dietitians who hold master’s degrees or doctorates. The facility includes a heated indoor pool, indoor and outdoor tracks, weight machines and free weights, and a variety of treadmills, bikes, and cross-trainers. The 30,000-square-foot center is on the 26-acre Duke Center for Living Campus, home to some of the most renowned weight management programs in the world.

Description: Kundalini, Journey through the Chakras, Asana Liberation, and Power Yoga are among the classes taught at the Yoga Practice Center, a small studio in south Durham. The instructors are experienced and include faculty members from UNC and Duke. Massage services are also provided at the center.

Description: The Vertical Edge has 8,500 feet of climbable surfaces, including 60 top-rope climbs that go as high as 24 feet, a bouldering cave, a leadable cave, and 20 leadable routes. Group or one-on-one classes are available for beginners ages 14 and older. Equipment is available for rent, and climbers who need belay partners can schedule them in advance. Supervised climbing parties can be arranged for children of all ages.
