Description: Tucked into the trees on the waterfront, this shop is huge, with plenty of display space for the hammocks, footstools, and porch swings made by this company. These are quality, handmade hammocks durable enough to last for years. Nags Head Hammocks has numerous Outer Banks locations.

Description: Loblolly Pines is a complex of shops and eateries where you can purchase anything from decals to precious gems. Whet your appetite with an ice-cream cone or sweet treat as well. Yesterday’s Jewels carries an interesting collection of old and new jewelry, including gold and sterling silver. Outer Banks Running Company sells running shoes in trusted brands, and the staff is very helpful with fittings. The shop also sells running wear and workout clothes and has information on local races. The Glass Bead has a great selection of beads from all over the world. Unique and custom jewelry is sold at this location as well. Sample the many scents at Southern Candle and Gifts, where soy and locally made candles are sold.

6. Osprey Landing

Description: Osprey Landing is a smaller shopping area overlooking the sound. Sarah De Spain jewelry designer and goldsmith creates original and custom jewelry. This store also carries designs by other specially selected jewelry designers. Pandora bracelets are available here. SunScents offers more than 30 brands of candles and unique locally produced seashell candles. Spa products can be found here as well. Just north of Osprey Landing are two other spots. Soundfeet Shoes sells the biggest selection of shoes on the Outer Banks, including Birkenstock, Naot, Dansko, Nike, Reebok, and more. A branch of Ocean Atlantic Rentals is also here; it rents any items you might have left behind, such as linens, towels, cribs, baby items, bikes, and water sports gear.

Description: This funky shop looks like it should be on a Caribbean island, but here it is in the heart of Duck, next to the Burger King and a gas station. DVO sells surfwear for all four seasons as well as surfboards, wetsuits, kayaks and kayaking gear, bikes and bike-related stuff, skateboards and the accompanying hard goods, shoes, and sunglasses. You can rent sports gear and bikes, too.

Description: On the southern end of the village, Greenleaf Gallery is considered the classiest gallery on the Outer Banks. You’ll find the work of several accomplished local artists, including painter Rick Tupper, who owns the gallery with his wife, Didi. Didi sets a high mark for inclusion in her gallery, so everything here is finely crafted and one of a kind. Glass, wood, oil, watercolor, fiber, pottery, and sculpture are among the mediums featured.
