Nightlife - Portland, Maine

Nightlife

As Portland has grown over the years from a little town to a big town to a little city, the nightlife here on the peninsula has also matured, especially for the over-21 set. This chapter highlights the notable activities for Portlanders looking to see and be seen in the evening hours. Here, you’ll find listings of the area’s best dance clubs, bars, brewpubs, and music venues as well as more subdued offerings at coffeehouses and wine bars. And, as usual, Portland offers up a few activities unique to the area—including disco bowling, a laser show at the planetarium, and, yes, Portland’s one and only strip club. In keeping with this quirkiness, we’ve listed a few “alternative” hot spots for those of you interested in the flipside of the city’s nightlife. Because Portland also has a thriving gay and lesbian community, the listings include Portland’s most popular gay nightclubs and bars. Portland is also home to a handful of teen spots, which are also included here.

Since almost all of the city’s nightlife is centered in Portland’s downtown, the listings are clumped by type of venue, not by location. In recent years the city’s nightlife has expanded beyond its traditional core in the Old Port to hot spots on Munjoy Hill and along Congress Street into the West End. This growth has been a positive one for the diversity and tenor of the nightlife scene here, and it means more alternative and quirky options for the bar-goer and culture-seeker in all of us. If you’re at a loss about where to go any night of the week, a good place to start is the busiest nighttime block on Fore Street, between Market and Union Streets. During the summer, however, be warned that Fore Street can get a little rowdy. Twenty-something partiers crowd the street, especially after 1 a.m., when the bars have to stop serving booze, and cops are now stationed on Fore Street all night to curb some people’s tendency to start drunken fights.

Portland’s nightlife has two incarnations. During the winter, snow and sub-zero temperatures send the nightlife scene underground here, meaning, while there’s still plenty going on, you likely won’t see evidence of the revelry in the streets because, well, it’s just too darn cold for that. But after a grueling Maine winter, residents can’t wait to get out and stroll around, and as soon as spring hits, the city transforms into a lively, visibly vibrant community and anybody who’s anybody seems to be out on the streets mingling.

This chapter includes some of the best late-night spots in town. Some of the brewpubs and taverns (like Rí~Rá and Gritty McDuff’s Brewing Co.) may also be listed in the Restaurant chapter with more details about the food served. If you’re interested in cutting a rug in a more organized fashion, check out the section on ballroom dancing in the Arts chapter.

For more information about specific offerings, the Portland Phoenix, an alternative arts and entertainment weekly, has the most nightlife listings of all of the newspapers in the area and honest reviews of alternative and mainstream theater performances. Pick it up for free in red boxes all around the downtown. On Thursdays also check out the “Go” section in the Portland Press Herald for movie and some event listings for the upcoming weekend.

As is true of the art form, karaoke here attracts both the talented and the talentless, but the ever-energetic crowd makes the whole experience a great time. OPT is also a steak house, with a full menu of pub, casual, and fine dining fare. For pool and darts in a bright, clean atmosphere, check out the pool hall on the second floor of the building housing the OPT, accessible from the entrance on Fore Street. 9. Ruski’S Tavern

City: Portland, ME
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (207) 774-7604
Address: 212 Danforth Street

Description: Ruski’s has served up a humble pint to generations of Portland’s West End residents. Recently, its appeal has expanded to people who don’t happen to live just around the corner, thanks in part to winning as “Best Neighborhood Bar” in a few Portland Phoenix surveys. At Ruski’s the drink prices are as down-home as the clientele. The pub is small, and interior design here translates to a few wooden stools, a bench or two, and a long wooden bar, which takes up most of the room. Ruski’s remains a local favorite and is a great place to hang out and slip into a conversation with someone who grew up in the neighborhood. Also, don’t miss Rosie’s at 330 Fore Street in the Old Port, the downtown cousin of Ruski’s (they share the same owner).

10. Sebago Brewing Company

City: Portland, ME
Category: Nightlife
Address: 164 Middle Street

Description: Sebago Brewing Company is a restaurant and sports lounge that features a selection of beers from the hometown brewery. Here, you can munch on a quesadilla or a peppercorn burger while watching sports on one of the dining room televisions and washing it all down with one of the many beers brewed here in Maine by Sebago Brewing Company. If you don’t feel like a beer, Sebago also has a full bar to choose from. If you’re a parent looking for a spot that is tailored for adults watching the game but that also serves good grub for the family, Sebago is a good place to go—since it’s half restaurant, half brewpub, the place tends to be clean and friendly to the underage set.

11. The Snug

City: Portland, ME
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (207) 772-6839
Address: 223 Congress Street

Description: Open seven nights a week from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., this new addition to the Portland Irish pub scene has already attracted plenty of loyal patrons. Located at the base of Munjoy Hill next to the equally new and equally popular North Star Cafe, The Snug is so named because of its high-backed, slightly uncomfortable wooden benches, modeled after the spots in traditional Irish pubs where those who wanted to drink away from the public’s prying eyes—like ladies, police officers, or lovers, would hunker down to enjoy a pint. These snugs aren’t quite as private—one side of the bench is open to the bar—but then, the vibe at this spot isn’t of the judgmental variety. The Snug is popular for good booze, a fun atmosphere, and a laid-back neighborhood vibe.

12. Three Dollar Dewey’S

City: Portland, ME
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (207) 772-3310
Address: 241 Commercial Street

Description: Three Dollar Dewey’s bills itself as “Portland’s Original Ale House.” Since opening 24 years ago in the Old Port, Dewey’s has made a name for itself as a large and lively alehouse with a healthy selection of bottled and draft beers. Dewey’s also serves American-style cuisine, including nachos, sandwiches, and burgers. The Dewey’s popcorn machine is always churning, and free popcorn is available all the time.

13. The Stadium Restaurant And Sports Bar

City: Portland, ME
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (207) 772-4263
Address: 504 Congress Street

Description: A massive sports bar in downtown Portland that consistently manages to pack the house on weekend nights, the Stadium sports bar has everything a sports fan needs and more. With a 90-foot bar, waitresses in skimpy team uniforms, 20 televisions, four big screens, four bars and four function rooms, the vibe here rivals that of a casino. Here, you can munch on traditional pub fare like buffalo wings and cheeseburgers, and challenge friends and enemies to any one of several games—like foosball, Golden Tee, or the oldie-but-goodie air hockey. If those games don’t offer the kind of excitement you’re looking for, drop in on Saturday and ride the Stadium’s mechanical bull. Go team!
