Description: Towson University began as the State Normal School, a state-sponsored teaching school in Baltimore city. It moved to its Towson campus in 1915, and the majestic building in which it was housed is still used by the university. Since then, the school has gone through many incarnations, ending up as the current Towson University, sitting on 328 acres, the second-largest university in Maryland. The university grants baccalaureate degrees in 63 majors, 39 masters degrees, and 4 doctorial programs through its eight colleges: the College of Business and Economics; the College of Education; the College of Fine Arts and Communication; the College of Graduate and Extended Education; the College of Health Professions; the College of Liberal Arts; the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences; and the Honors College. Approximately 21,177 full- and part-time students attend Towson, with an 18:1 student-teacher ratio. There’s residential space for 4,500. The school boasts state-of-the-art facilities in radio and TV and a growing reputation in the mass-media industry.
