Description: Located on the site of the old St. Louis Church, Louisville’s redbrick neo-Gothic cathedral was designed by William Keeley and Isaiah Rogers, two of the country’s finest 19th-century architects. Constructed in 1852, it is one of the oldest public buildings in the city, as well as the third-oldest Catholic cathedral in the United States in continuous use. The steeple rises 287 feet and was counted as North America’s tallest spire when it was completed. The coronation window is one of the oldest surviving examples of hand-painted stained glass in the country. It is open most days for viewing, and on Sundays, the Archdiocese of Louisville History Center provides an opportunity to experience the Catholic heritage of the Archdiocese of Louisville through objects and artifacts from its earliest beginnings in 1775 to the present day.
