E. P. Tom Sawyer Park - Parks & Recreation - Louisville, Kentucky

City: Louisville, KY
Category: Parks & Recreation

Description: Louisville is fortunate to have one of 52 Kentucky State Parks in its city limits. E. P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park was named in honor of Erbon Powers “Tom” Sawyer, a World War II veteran, University of Louisville Law School graduate, and Jefferson County judge, who died in a tragic automobile accident in 1969. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Linda and Diane, who is the anchor of ABC’s World News. Once a farm developed by the former Central State Hospital, the land this park occupies still has remnants of its early days, including barns and cemeteries. Governor Louie B. Nunn dedicated the park in the fall of 1971, and since then the population in eastern Jefferson County has boomed, resulting in thousands of people who come to enjoy the beauty of nature every day.
