Description: First published in December of 2003 by the Courier-Journal, Velocity is a free full-color tabloid that is distributed at some 1,800 locations through a 13-county area that encompasses Louisville and parts of southern Indiana. It has been widely seen as an attempt by the CJ and its parent company, Gannett, to snatch some of the market away from the Louisville Eccentric Observer. Although most consider it consciously nonpolitical, Velocity has on occasion covered hot-button issues such as gay life, the Iraq War, and the ban on public smoking in Louisville. The target demographic is readers in their 20s and 30s, and regular weekly features include columns about the town’s nightlife and entertainment scene. “Rock This Town” profiles a local band or musician, and “The Party Crasher” features a photo-story about big parties that were held over the weekend. “The Bar Hopper” always spotlights a local tavern, and “All I’m Saying Is” ponders a reader-submitted essay. Another popular part of Velocity’s lineup is “The Big Screen.” The latter is a movie section detailing movies playing locally with humorous one-paragraph reviews.
