Description: The University of Louisville Hospital got its start when the General Assembly of Kentucky established the Louisville Hospital Company in 1817. In 1910 ground was broken for a new $942,000 hospital, which opened its doors in 1914, and by 1939 the hospital had become officially affiliated with the U of L School of Medicine. After further growth the name changed to Louisville General Hospital in 1942, and in 1978, construction began on a new hospital building. In 1979, this hospital was deeded to the University of Louisville. Today it’s one of the most influential centers for medical research and health care in the nation.
