Description: Floyd Memorial Hospital got its start in 1947, when community leaders in southern Indiana got together to address the need to expand the aging St. Edward’s Hospital. Six years later, they dedicated the new Memorial Hospital of Floyd County in memory of community members who had served during wartime. The hospital has grown steadily over the years, and in January of 2006, it opened its new comprehensive Heart and Vascular Center with expanded intensive care and cardiovascular care units. In April 2006 they opened a new state-of-the-art emergency center that includes a Critical Decision Unit, Fast Track area, and a specialized Cardiac Unit and trauma rooms. In addition, Floyd Memorial’s newly expanded Women’s Imaging Center opened in July 2006. Other advances occurred in December 2007, when a new 10-room pediatric unit opened, and in May of 2008, when Floyd Memorial began welcoming post-op surgery patients to its new 32-bed Surgical Inpatient Unit, with all private rooms and advanced telemetry monitoring.
