Health Care - Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Health Care

You’ll find that the county is highly rated for the quality of its healthcare services. In addition to branches of world-renowned medical centers—like the Cleveland Clinic—there are also a number of well-known physicians and researchers working here, to cure many of our most dangerous diseases. There are also several specialty centers, for example, hospitals which might specialize in heart surgery and care.

Many of the hospitals listed below have achieved great distinction. The Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Cooper City, for example, is a branch of the world-famous hospital in Cleveland, to which heart patients come from all over the world for treatment. Holy Cross Hospital, in Oakland Park, also has a good reputation, as do Broward General Hospital and Westside Regional.

The Memorial Health Care System, with 25 branches throughout the county—including a variety of hospitals, surgery centers, and clinics—has won some 70 awards over the years. Broward Health, founded in 1938, is one of the 10 largest public health-care systems in the country, with some two-dozen hospitals, clinics, and specialty-care centers in the county. This company, too, has won numerous awards, including a number from an organization called HealthGrades, which rates hospitals.

Broward County also has a branch (in Plantation) of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, probably the most advanced place for treatment of eye diseases in Florida. Bascom Palmer is actually the Department of Ophthalmology for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The Institute is now known internationally as a pioneer in research and has developed one of the most highly sought-after ophthalmology-education programs in the nation.

In addition to hospitals, of course, Greater Fort Lauderdale has a variety of walk-in clinics and emergency centers, all over the county. Some of them are open 24 hours a day.
