It’s a half-block away from Pennsylvania Avenue, about equal distance from the White House and the Capitol. There’s nearby parking for $10 a day, a restaurant, bar, barbershop, and laundry room. The Harrington has always done a strong business with Europeans. More Americans should follow their lead. Families may want to try one of the 26 suites in the 260-unit hotel.

Description: The International Guest House is a nonprofit facility maintained by the Mennonite Church to provide clean, inexpensive lodging for international visitors in a homey atmosphere. Indeed, the large brick home with its wraparound porch is in a pleasant residential area off 16th Street NW, across the street from Rock Creek Park. Breakfast is served family style at 8 a.m., with guests and staff eating together. There is a large living room for lounging and reading, and a television is in the basement. Smoking and alcohol are not permitted. However, for the rock-bottom rate of $30 per person per night, you can hardly find a more reasonable bargain in a nice, safe area.

Mostly frequented by guests of the university and seminar participants, the conference center offers some rooms with kitchenettes plus a swimming pool and health club. All of the Georgetown neighborhood is a short walk away, and the business district of Rosslyn (Virginia) looms just across Key Bridge. Don’t worry about nonstop college parties keeping you up at night; the hotel is at the far-north end of campus, in a relatively quiet residential area.

Description: A clean, safe alternative for young travelers on a budget, this 270-bed dorm-style hostel is 1 block north of the Washington Convention Center and near many of the city’s top restaurants. Both the rooms and huge kitchen have recently been remodeled. There’s a large common area for meeting other travelers (lots of Europeans here), a 60-inch TV, and a coin-operated laundry. Free movies and tours are available and, as you can imagine, security is very tight. The price is rock bottom—$20 for members of the hostelling association and $29 for nonmembers. A free continental breakfast is served each morning.
