Description: This attraction, adjacent to the San Luis Rey Mission, celebrates the beginning of the city of Oceanside, one of the oldest incorporated cities in San Diego County. Walking down the main thoroughfare of Heritage Park Village is like walking down Main Street in the old American West. Kids especially enjoy it. A small-fry Insider recently said, “It’s just like a movie set.”You’ll stroll by the first general store, a blacksmith shop, a small museum, and livery stable. Along the way you’ll pass by Oceanside’s original city jail, Libby School (the first public school), and the newspaper office. And you’ll also see Mrs. Nellie Johansen’s house, built in 1886 and complete with living-room furnishings and kitchen appliances from the era. Guided tours are available by arrangement, and the entire area can be reserved for special events, including weddings. The grounds are open 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; the buildings are open for visitation Sundays only, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Call for special tour information. Admission to the park is free.
