Description: Toka Sticks began as an Air Force golf course as part of Williams Air Force Base. The Gila River Indian Community bought the course in 1996 and renamed it for a traditional field-hockey game played by the women of the Pima tribe. The Pimas upgraded the course to the tune of $2 million, adding new cart paths and bunkers and sprucing up the greens. The 6,680-yard, par-72 traditional course was built in two phases. The Air Force built the first nine holes in the early 1950s, and the second nine, designed by civil engineers, were added in the early 1980s. The course is lined with trees such as eucalyptus and salt cedar. The toughest hole on the course—a par 5 of 541 yards—is saved for last. Amenities include a clubhouse, pro shop, driving range, putting and chipping greens, and a snack bar.The morning greens fees, including cart, in high season are $45, 7 days a week, but afternoon tee times drop the rates quite a bit. In May the fees drop by $10; they drop again in August.
