China’s “duplitecture” trend aimed to create perfect copies of foreign cities like Paris and Venice. They’ve become something much more interesting.

Las Vegas and Orlando are also quintessentially fake cities. They lack soul and character IMO.

I haven't been to Orlando, no interest in Florida really. Las Vegas I've been 3 times over the years. It is what it is. By that, I mean, I went not expecting the Las Vegas Strip to be anything but an adult Disneyland, and it is.

It's a weekend type of place. Anything longer would get boring really quickly.

Orlando and Las Vegas are definitely fun and not boring at all. Even if not particularly "soulful".

They're definitely not your traditional city lover's type of cities.

I guess my tastes for fun are different than most people. I was bored after like 3 hours in Vegas. Everything seemed so contrived and artificial. I decided to just rent a car and explore the parks and small towns outside of Vegas instead of staying in town which I did enjoy quite a lot.

I get that, but my threshold is a bit longer, only because I see a show, go out for dinner and people watch. After 3 days, I'm bored.

My partner and I don't gamble, so that isn't the attraction for us. Well we do have ONE gambling ritual.

We each get to choose a slot machine, anywhere and at anytime during our visit. We each get to play one dollar. That's it. If you lose it, no more gambling. If you win, you can only put back into the machine your winnings, if you lose that, then game over.

Dollars usually gone it two seconds. Once I did win 160 USD, but didn't put it back. Bought dinner instead.

Well, Vegas is build to be an entertrainment city for adults. Several of Vegas’ #1 rankings are no surprise. They include the per capita number of casinos, dance clubs, lounges, music venues and shopping centers.
It's fake and it's fun for few days, short vacation as Orlando is a fun city for kids.
Both places build for particular purposes. To entertain. So, of course they are fake, kitschy, both urban spaces being thematized and devoted to fantasies upon fantasies and worlds within worlds.
You shouldn't expect more.

Some of those resort towns and knockoff global cultural landmarks are more successful than other, but perhaps the idea was to function both as housing estates and tourist attractions for those who can’t travel to see the real thing.
China’s rising middle and upper class are exploring the world, but its still expensive and difficult. For many Chinese citizens, a visit to the Paris replica in Hangzhou is the next best thing.

E.g.Chinese families who can’t afford to travel to the Parthenon in Greece can instead visit Lanzhou in Gansu to see a copy.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is eerily similar to the American West. The resort town - where wealthy Chinese city inhabitants go for vacation - has a town square, cowboys, a church and Route 66 running through it.

Some fake replicas became ghost cities, most likely because of their location. Towns located closer to main cities have sold much better.
A good example is Tianducheng, the city has been transformed from a ghost town to a normal place where people live: most of the parking spots are occupied, couples stroll its streets in the evenings, and beneath the faux Eiffel tower, tourists and wedding parties can be seen posing for photos throughout the day, every day.

I like the idea of building fake cities under glass in places with a different climate. For instance have an indoor city where it's always below freezing and winter for people in tropical climates who otherwise would never be able to live or travel to places with this climate. Same with tropical cities under glass in northern latitudes with bright sunlamps for those who can't afford to go to the tropics on vacation
