They are both massive, insanely overpopulated countries with over a billion people each (the next most populated country is a quarter of their size). They are both third world with incredible levels of income inequality. They are both very different from the western world in many aspects. Both countries have huge manufacturing economies.
I'm half Chinese-American, and I don't think they are similar, but maybe a little similar.
The people look different of course, although some people in the eastern part of India close to China look a bit like East Asians. Rice is a big part of the diet of both countries, education seems to be respected in both countries, and Buddhism originated from India from what I know. They're also big, overcrowded countries.
For the most part, not that similar, but you can find a few similarities.
In Western media, China and India are often mentioned in the same breath, how similar are they?
Not that similar. Indians really don't care much about China, except for the border issues that recur from time to time. The Chinese probably feel the same way towards Indians.
I think that the Himalayan mountains will forever be a physical and mental barrier between the 2 mega-countries.
