So what do 'First Husbands' do when they accompany their wives on official state visits? I recall how Michelle Obama was invited to tour some garden with Peng Li Yuan (the First Lady of China) and other 'lady-like' stuff when the American Head of State visited China a few months ago.
So assuming there's a NATO conference of sorts and the mostly-male Heads of States are busy discussing international affairs while their wives are invited to do 'lady-like' stuff such as attending flower arrangement classes, wouldn't it be excruciatingly weird for the 'First Husbands'?
Pentti Arajärvi was the First Husband for 12 years. He's a doctor of law and interested in the rights and welfare of children, so he was often involved in those things. He was also a leading bureaucrat, so he might've had some business on his own on state visits. Often he just hanged around. I don't think he would've agreed to go pick some flowers with Chirac's or Schröder's wives.
This "First Lady" idea is really a American invention. I think very few countries take the spouse of their PM/President seriously. They are seen as simply a person married to someone with an important job. The US has turned the "First Lady" idea into some kind of royalty.
Angela Merkel's surname is that of her first husband. She is now married, for 16 years, to Joachim Sauer, a quantum chemist and full professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin.
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner succeeded her late husband as president of Argentina, He died 2 years after she was elected to office.
South Korean president Park Geun-hye has never been married.
Chile's Michelle Bachelet is legally separated from her husband.
Canada's governor-generfal Michaelle Jean is married to film-maker Jean-Daniel Lafond, who is therefore the Viceregal Consort of Canada.
Brazil's Dilma Vana Rousseff has been unmarried since 2000.

Solid rundown, but, FYI, Canada's governor-general has been David Johnston since October 2010.
Back in 2012 when our presidential election was taking place, one of the candidates- English Tsai, who will most likely be our president in 2016(thank goodness!), wasn't married or in any sort of relationship. One of the arguments from KMT that claimed Tsai wouldn't be a good president was that she's a lesbian.
She's still single now, I'm pretty sure that KMT and their (brainless) supporters are gonna question her sexual orientation again, as if it's any of their ****ing business.
