I had a relative from either Hendersonville or Mecklenburg. He was most likely born sometime between 1910 and 1920. Basically, I'm trying to learn whether he was English, Irish, or a combination of both ethnicities.

Back in the 1910 to 1920 time period, was there a good number Irish descendants in those two areas above? Or was everyone pretty much all English descent?

Scottish , Irish , English and Germans all settled in WNC to might be you should try tracing family thru Ancestry.com .

Lots of Scots-Irish in NC, especially in the piedmont and western NC. They were ethnic scots, removed to northern ireland by the english crown who later immigrated here in the 18th century. Read more here:

This certainly makes things more complicated than I thought. I didn't anticipate Scottish and German.

This late relative's surname has existed both in England and Ireland for a long time. Oddly, the name comes from different root words and names despite it being the same surname. I'll have to look into whether it existed in Scotland as well.
