Higher elevations, ~4,000 ft and up, range from peak to past peak with some areas showing bare trees. Some species have given up their leaves already, and many were hammered/stripped in the 70+ mph winds and rain we had a week ago.
Lower elevations are not peak yet, except for some color individuals...
This weekend promises to be sunny, warmish for this time of year, and it may be beautiful, regardless of leaf color; it will also be packed so drive early, do your looking early in day, late in afternoon toward evening, imo.

Here is a quick screen grab of the view cam on Purchase Knob, about 4 miles from our house, same altitude of 5,000 ft. Decent color, leaves dropping like, well leaves, some bare trees. Lower elevations will have time to go. C'mon out to western NC!

I live at 3000 ft and greater than 80% of the leaves move from green, to green and yellow and brown. If you are expecting this in the NC mountains, you are going to be disappointed. To see this you have to go to North Conway, NH the middle weekend in October.

Unless you want to drive around Asheville/Hendersonville, et al, I rec'd the BRParkway, from Asheville south toward Cherokee, or even better, the Cherohala Skyway, which has < 30% of the Parkway traffic.
The turnoffs, easy access walking sites, etc. may be packed Sat or Sunday, esp mid day, as many of the tourists don't get up/get going early.
Having lived in NY for 3 decades, and having spent many an Autumn weekend doing m'cycle trips through New England, mlhm5's photo is right on, but one will not find anything remotely similar to an upstate NY/New England color effect here at this latitude on the east coast. But, beautiful scenery here. Drive safely on your weekend jaunt.

The turnoffs, easy access walking sites, etc. may be packed Sat or Sunday, esp mid day, as many of the tourists don't get up/get going early.

MD, do you think that may be due to our not having a lot of maple trees here? They may be the most prolific reds up north.
You're spot on, the Cherahola would be a great choice. The BRP will be bumped to the max. Ch. 13 last night had a piece on the accidents already happening up there, people not paying attention to the speed limits; they said it was pretty clogged last weekend. I guess many of them didn't see the movie, Thelma & Louise -- which could be their fate if they don't pay attention.
And those "adorable"bears crossing the road are another distraction that people stop for.
I was in Cherokee yesterday, the colors just don't seem that great this year for some reason, at least not in that area.
