Soo...my family has been looking at relocating to Wheeling, WVA. So far from our research, we have found that it seems to be a smaller 30,000 people town with several colleges nearby and very cheap houses.
What I really would like to know is, what is bad about the area? How's the pollution? people? what's there to do? Please, I am desperate for honest feedback about the good the bad and the ugly.
Wheeling is a great West Virginia town. Located in the heart of everything. The only thing I don't like are the speed traps that the State Police set up in the summer. Stuebenville and St. Clairsville, and Pittsburgh are close...shopping is great. Lots of history. It was the gateway to the entire western USA. Cigar capital of the world at one time. You will have a great time...get ready. Wheeling is like its own little country and not really part of WV. Some great schools there too...I think our best.
It flooded it 2005 ??? I'm really having some difficulties finding anything bad about Wheeling. It doesn't really snow that often, it gets decently cold during the winters. I agree with Kennedy about the speed traps! on I-70 it suddenly goes from 70 mph to 55, and I got pulled over right at the 55 sign for going 69! But luckily one of my best friends who goes to Wheeling Jesuit University babysits his neices and nephew, so when I contested it, he didn't show up
I just happened to see this question and thought I would put in my 2 cents. I work with a gentleman who is from Wheeling, WV and who moved because a job over 20+ years ago. He is looking to go back to Wheeling as soon as he retires in about 5 years. He loves it there, talks about how great it was, etc. I am sure he may be able to say some negative things about it but compared to where we live now, it sounds like a much better place to live! Sorry I couldnt help, hope you dont mind my input. Thanks and good luck!
Thanks to everyone for your honest and helpful feedback, it has helped sooo much so far.
I have another question, though. What is the difference between Wheeling and Wheeling Island besides location?
Also, how is the job outlook for elementary teachers?
Are there many job openings? How are the schools?
Do people from outside states have a chance at getting a job?
Severe shortage of teachers...contact the BOE asap...before you move as to needed qualifications. Education Specialites can name their salary.
I always thought Wheeling Island was the location for the old town and the industrial complex area...much of which is being reconstructed for tourism and shopping now.
While I have a slight prejudice against Wheeling from an historical perspective, after reading this New York Times article from a few years (1990, actually) back even I wanted to go for a visit. It does't have a lot of "bad" in it though. West Virginia's Historic Panhandle - New York Times
