It seems in SW Washington my neighbors have to deal with squatters - just camping out on their land. They often have meth problems or other criminal records..

Washington doesn't seem to have tough laws allowing the land - home owners to throw them out.

What gives?

Have you talked to the local sheriff? You're right to be proactive about this, and find out what recourse you have before it becomes an issue on your property. Does your neighbor have "No Trespassing" signs up?

Well my neighbor is a deputy sheriff so my suggestion to use his shotgun was not accepted. Because squatter has a criminal record including domestic violence, he thinks he will be able to remove him without too much trouble.

I dont mind people walking on my properties - there are nice views etc but its not their home.

JMO - no such thing as "squators rights".
But realistically, throwing them in jail is giving them a holiday. Giving them a fine is futile.
And having a rap sheet for trespassing/squators will only prolong their homelessness.
Homeless encampments should be made on the Columbia Plateau in WA and in high plateau of the JohnDay area in Oregon. Let them enjoy the stars and beauty of seeing horizon-to-horizon with not a tree over 6ft and ground devoid of soil except for the residue of the columbia volcanic flows and volcanic eruptions.
