Just in case you've misunderstood Crazy Donkey's post, Shelton is on the opposite side of Puget Sound (and Oympia) than Tacoma. It is not a neighborhood of Tacoma. It's a former logging town that's seen better days, which is why it's affordable. But it's starting to experience a bit of an upswing, due to its relative proximity to Olympia. People who are priced out of Olympia are moving to Shelton. So there's hope for the future there.

Thanks for answering the question. Your main challenge is going to be affordability, if you're finding Tacoma prices high. For example, Shelton is affordable, but I doubt it has an Apple store, REI or TJ's. You'd have to drive in to the Olympia area for that.

Olympia doesn't have an Apple store. The Tacoma Apple store is the one nearest to Olympia.

We do have a Verizon store where we got our iPhones. In lots of ways it’s better to buy it from your carrier so you make sure you have the right chips. Costco carries iPads.
