Thanks so much! That is very helpful. My wife hates flood plains so that probably eliminates at least much of Skagit Valley.

Kind of funny! Thank you. My wife was attacked and left for dead at one point during her 8 years military service, Gulf War era, and can be pretty darn cautious. Opposite of me in feeling the need for caution I suppose! Not that I take any unnecessary chances, and I do care about the relative safety of an area for her sake. The descriptions of what it may be like these days in the areas you covered kind of reminds me of how much it was overcast when I lived in Seattle not far from UW as a young man, 1976 to 1980. That goes with a certain mood! I got used to it and was always outdoors anyway! I suppose as a Senior it may be quite the adjustment after many years in the San Francisco Bay area.

It's San Fransicko.
In the 90's there was a big migration from CA to Washington. My in-laws moved to Whatcom County from a 900 sq. ft. home down here, up by the Canadian border. It was so beautiful and rural up there. Now I have heard things are not the same and those people are moving out of Washington state.

Those border area homes are now in the $600K-$1 Million+ range. Worse yet...think a recession will make them affordable? Nope, when the US dollar tanks the Canadians swoop down and buy up the homes.

What's going on up there, anyway? What does it mean, "things are not the same" there anymore? No longer rural? Its the border area getting built up? There are still plenty of farm properties and rural-ness around Lynden.

Yup, Californication of the 'other' 10 western states WITHOUT prop 13 protection means the locals who built those great communities are forced to be displaced/ (3x for me, 3x for my grandparents, 2x for my parents)

I thought WA State enacted a CA Proposition 13-like measure a few years ago...?

Voter approved, but Struck down by WA State supreme Court (too restrictive to counties and schools, ie, no more 'blank check'.)

Property taxes? Mine from $800 / yr to $14,700 / yr. Same home, no improvements, just more worn out. No job / income since 2005. Assessor wins, and will get my house. (Again)
