My wife and I are considering a move to either Boone, NC or Bellingham, WA. If there is anyone out there that has spent significant time in both, I’d love to talk further. Please reply here or DM me. Thanks!

Note: also posted this in the NC forum

I currently live in Bellingham but lived in Western NC for many years and spent plenty of time in Boone and Asheville. What would you like to know?

Both are college towns, though Boone is much smaller and more college-centric. Boone is likely more conservative, but I haven't been there since the 70's. Asheville gets a lot of positive mentions.
That's all I got.

wolfdog - do you live in Bellingham? Was your time in Boone and Asheville just from visits?

Lived in Raleigh, but went to the mountains fairly often. Spent a few years in the Bellingham area, decades ago, but planning to move back to the area soon, but not in B'ham.

Got it. So it seems you would be able to weigh in on weather and outdoor access. How would you compare the two towns and which do you find to be the long-term more enjoyable environment for those two aspects? I realize it is just your opinion, but it is an opinion that has experience in both areas.

If you're referring to me, it's Bellingham, hands down. Beauty in every direction, if you can take the winters. And you have Vancouver, BC, just an hour away. Fabulous city.
I just can't tell you about either place, from recent personal experience. But I've been doing some relocation research, for ourselves, for quite awhile now. I hope this helps. Boone is likely cheaper real estate.

I went to college in Boone for a while, returned to Blowing Rock for marriage, and now live in Bellingham. They are very different. I miss the Blue Ridge Parkway but not much else about Boone.

west seattle girl - is that because you didn’t enjoy your time in the Boone area or just because you find most aspects of life to be better in Bellingham? Feel free to DM me your thoughts on pros and cons of each option with consideration for our wants and situation if you prefer. Thank you!

I enjoyed my time in Boone, but the town is composed predominantly of young college students, mostly undergraduates, and is surrounded by a lot of very conservative, non-college educated, very Southern locals. If you are older than your 20's, you may feel a bit lonely and isolated. Bellingham has more intellectual activity, people of all ages, and outdoor opportunities. If you want to stay in the NC mountains, look at Asheville.
