I get static in the "Los Angeles" forum for mentioning West Covina, you'd think it was Thule Greenland.

It's been 1991 since I've been there.

Small world, from the San Gabriel Valley to Western Wa and the Olympic pen.

I like it up here much better and I'm glad to be retiring to my place in Lilliwaup!

nearest chase bank atm to me

The property tax on my old place in West Covina is in the $6,000 range nowadays!

I'm planning on utilizing some forest resources to supplement my low-cost retirement, like wild edibles and deadfall for my home fires and I know where there is a stand of saplings that need thinning for my round stock.

Shelton will be the closest "big" city near me.

Well one of us will have to set a thread on the Covina Valley!

Here, this will take you right back!

I do miss CA sometimes, especially after seeing a mattress in a yard, but after living there, Tx, Az, and finally WA, have to admit that I don’t miss those searing hot summers! Yesterday, it was cool and cloudy and while runnng errands, thought how lucky people are to live here. I actually hate hot sunny days.

You should read about homesteading and similar sites online. When I started keeping chickens, those articles were most informative. And check out Mother Earth News, they have great advise for starting a garden and growing various foods. Shelton probably has a fair number of like minded folks who should be a good support system if you need advise. You can learn ways to save a ton of money.

Thanks for the clip on W Covina. I miss the May Co and all that plentiful and easy to get to shopping. But with that convenience came traffic jams. I bet the commute time in Shelton is ten minutes.

Hello! Rather than start a whole new thread I'm tagging along to this one..I'm new so bear with me.

Anyone else have any info about areas surrounding Olympia, maybe further north into Belfair? There's a lot of beautiful areas around the Olympic Peninsula that I've driven thru but never spent much time in.

I've also heard good things about Sequim - though I've heard many folks retire there, it sounds like there's stuff to do and good weather. Any thoughts for those in their late 30s/40s? If it helps, I'm not looking for much "nightlife" or bar crawling stuff. Maybe occasional live music or a small local band/art show nearby. The outdoors, a few decent restaurants, and nice people are more important. Hope it's ok to post this here!

I'll chat here... though I think it's usually cleaner to start a new thread. We'll have other replies here now for other posts mixed in.

I think there's lots to like about Olympia, Shelton, Belfair, and Sequim. Olympia, at this point, probably has the biggest "issues" of the areas listed, but also the most choices for shopping and services.

They're all different in size and type and area.

There's good restaurants in all of them.... if you can like pretty casual places. A bar with a good burger or fish and chips or a steak. None of these towns will be known for ritzy or highly dressy places... that's not really NW style.

Much depends on what you're looking for, for town, shopping, and access to, or distance from, the big city.

The further out you get, the more you can get for your money in terms of house, and acreage. I love the drive from Olympia up through Shelton and Bremerton, Port Orchard, Belfair, Allyn, all cute towns of varying size with the basics... All within an hour or so to a bigger city with normal major shopping if you need that.

Internet access is ~OK~ in most areas but can get sketchy in rural parts, because even Satellite can be a challenge out there. Cellular is getting better, as an option.

It depends on how you view places. The area surrounding Olympia is pretty country, but homeless camps are dotted all over, maybe you can overlook them. If you like hiking or camping, by all means spend time outdoors, but be careful. Take a friend or large dog with you. The Hood Canal area is pretty, couldn’t say how much crime is there, but lots of people enjoy living close to the water. Just be cognizant that the more rural you go, the more isolated it gets and the more strange neighbors you’re likely to run across.

Sequim is beautiful, the only negatives I’ve heard about are a methadone clinic or something similar built there, crime and being bored. You’ll find nice people anywhere, restaurants are subjective. Spend time in a place and get to know it. What is wonderful to you, might not be so great to the next person. Not sure Sequim has an artsy vibe, but maybe they do and a local can fill you in on that.

Satellite coverage and cellular are a pita, at least where I live. My spouse gets knocked off his computer two to three times a day, while he’s working. I can’t make a call in certain parts of the house or yard.
