i love Vashon Island and Orcas Island: the gorgeous landscape, the rural life with sophisticated taste, the mild climate (better on Orcas?) and a simpler life. Whidby Island, or at least the areas i visited, had no appeal. i want to retire to a place where i can have some privacy without being too isolated, a sense of community -- but not co-housing (i'm not that sociable), where i can garden and make art. an ideal situation would be a small cottage, low taxes, near a town with like-minded people, some health services, a bookstore, a bakery and local produce. i'm sure there are places i haven't investigated -- any suggestions?

Did you visit Coupeville, on Whitby? It fits your criteria perfectly. It should be less expensive to live there than in Eastsound, on Orcas.
Anacortes also has everything you mention.
Port Townsend (or smaller Port Hadlock, nearby) might also fit.

Default helpful hints?

Perhaps the village of indianola, or Port Gamble might work..... Both on the kitsap penninsula.

Default Puget Sound

Having been to Friday Harbor and Coupeville numerous times, I'd recommend Coupeville (which has a terrific homemade ice cream parlor). You didn't mention whether cost is a factor but Friday Harbor and Eastside, because of their isolation (i.e., need ferry for everything), have much higher costs of living. Another place you might want to consider is Guemes Island (also accessible only by boat/ferry) which is a very short ride from Anacortes, which is sort of artsy, and has the basic commercial services of a city of 18,000.

Good luck!

Default Sequim? How is this pronounced?

I currently live in Wisconsin, and am tired of the snow/ice and cold weather. Years ago I used to live in Tacoma, but am looking for a smaller community. Can anyone tell me about Sequim? on the web appears they do not have a lot of preceiptation. How are jobs, and the cost of living?

Sequim is a small community (5000, area 23000, nearby Port Angeles 18000), so has less diverse job opportunities than larger cities. The area is growing, and the most recent unemployment rate (October) is 4.7%, the same as the state and national averages, and the lowest in this county in 16 years. So it should be a good time to be looking. Might check the classifieds in our local newspaper http://www.peninsuladailynews.com/ (broken link)

Sperlings rates the Sequim cost of living index at 103 and nearby Port Angeles at 99 (vs US average 100).

p.s. Sequim is pronounced "skwim".
