Hi everyone. I'm planning a January trip to Washington and would love to get some snowboarding in while I'm there. I plan on flying into SeaTac, renting a suv and driving up to Stevens Pass for a few days in January. Snowboard there for a few days and drive back to Seattle and stay in a hotel for a few days to roam around the city and see the attractions and eateries.

My question-Does anyone know if the rental companies allow snow chains to be put on a rented SUV? My experience in different states were that putting chains on a rental car could damage the vehicle, so the renter is strictly forbidden. BUT, i need an suv (4wd) to get into the mountains and sometimes snowchains are required beyond a certain point. I was hoping rental companies in WA would be more accepting??

Probably a dumb question, but I just thought I'd ask.

Thank you.

We asked about this from various hire car companies and they say snow chains are not allowed.

In the end we rented an AWD and it was fine for getting up and over Stevens Pass and to the ski resort. I also took my minivan up there in Feb. I pulled over to put chains on when I saw the traction tires advisory message, but the State trooper pulled up behind me and said my tires were mud + snow (M+S) and so I didn't need the chains. They're a nightmare to put on anyway!

Addylady,

Thank you! I'll try to get an AWD rental if available.
