Im a federal employee currently working/living outside Savannah,GA at Ft Stewart. Ive been here sometime but long for return west (grew up in/out of SF) after 25 yrs away. Anyways I want to know about living around Ft Lewis-say Roy or Lacy? I love the outdoors-can fish, hunt, romp in the woods all day every day and never get my fill. My 15 yr old son loves the same plus skateboarding and dirtbiking. Which towns would anyone suggest and I dont want to live in a clear cut cookie cutter neighborhood but do want to be around good friendly neighborly people.

If you want rural / small town, probably look in Yelm / Roy / McKenna or even Rainier or the wilder area called Vail. Lots of forest company land and public land nearby.

Most of established Lacey itself is typical moderate density urban development. There are spots north of Lacey and out Highway 510 to the south with fairly crowded but maybe tolerable new developments but also some older houses and such that might be appealing. Woods and water nearby too but not as wild.

Yelm has a skatepark. Lacey has recently added one in the south part of town and skaters also go in west Olympia. Some descriptions and pictures here Concrete Disciples Skateboarding - Skatepark Directory & Listings for: Washington, United States

DuPont could work too with some adjacent (pretty flat) woods for mucking about and it is near the Sound for saltwater fishing and probably some streams.

Come to think of it, "if" you could find a place to live near the small gas stop / farm area of Nisqually (far less available choices than the other areas) that could also be a good spot with reasonable access in different directions to work, shopping, fishing and woods.

I would recommend Roy, McKenna, or Yelm. All of them offer a reasonable commute time to JBLM, and offer rural living and access to nature. Home prices in these towns are very affordable and you'll still be able to find property with acreage.
Good luck!
