I moved recently back to Washington from Texas, and I am pretty disturbed by how much more many things cost more here than in San Antonio, especially meat.

I've already done some shopping at Fred Meyer, Safeway, Target and Walmart, and am going to try to check out a bakery outlet and dollar store tomorrow. I would like to know who has the best prices on most items overall.

Wait until you find out the low quality of the meat you are paying for. Don't know about Texas, but in my Kansan homeland, the local stuff would not be served in a restaurant.

Yes, this is a good reason to take a cheap SWA flight to DEN ($79) BAGS Fly Free = (2) 50# coolers of good prairie Beef on the return (Salmon / steelhead on the outbound) // It is worth the trade, tho Prairie folks will pay you a bit higher for the Steelhead.

I did have some pretty good top sirloin at the Steamplant Grill in Spokane, though. They didn't have a very good quality of beef to work with, but the chef's artistry in preparation got it as far as it could ever go, and his best was pretty good. Kind of like a slow ballplayer with a fairly weak arm and not a lot of hitting power who, through utter determination and force of will, makes the major league starting lineup anyway. His lack of talent makes what he achieved all the more impressive.

Speaking of which, the steelhead at the Steamplant is first rate as well.

What about Rosaurs? I see their ads on the local OTA TV, sometimes prices seem pretty good, but have never been there.

Not cheap, but very good, is Essencia Bakery on 3rd right off Yakima Avenue, more or less downtown. Life is too short to eat cheap bread.

I don't know of a good butcher shop in ***, but if you wanted to come to Sunnyside, Jerry's Meats is very good, price is fair for what you get. Take a look in the Yellow Pages (I guess that dates me...) and see if there is a good butcher shop in or near ***.

I do like the organic pork at Rosauers, but that's about it. I have yet to find a grocery store that sells a nice cut of ribeye.

I found a great shop- URM cash and carry on 5th and Yakima. They have some really good prices on many things compared to other stores around here. Big Lots has good prices on snack and canned foods- I got some cliff bars for 70 cents.
