I am relocating to the Santa Maria Valley from the East Coast. It is very strange to me that I am being asked to apply first then be deemed "qualified" in order to view rental properties. This practice is ridiculous! It is a money grab for sure since every rental application has a fee. Is anyone else dealing with this issue?

Santa Maria is in California. You're in the wrong state forum. Repost over there and you 'may' get better responses. My father-in-law used to live in Santa Maria. But he didn't rent. General rule of thumb is if it feels like a scam, try elsewhere.
