I did a search for "car title" in the Texas forum, but didn't see quite my issue being addressed, hence the reason for this new thread.

My daughter, a student in Texas, is driving my car--title is in my name, and the vehicle is plated and registered in Massachusetts. What I'd like to do, since she will be there for a few more years, is to:
  • Transfer the title to her name
  • Avoid any sales tax since it's going to be a "gift"
  • Register and plate the vehicle in TX

Any guidance on the overall sequence / process to do the above, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Here:
https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/register-your-vehicle

Since it’s a gift to your daughter, she’ll pay only the $10 gift tax (and not the full 6%) plus fees.
You’ll need to complete & notarize the gift affidavit ( and the application for reg.)
Since she is your daughter, that qualifies her.

Forms you’ll need:
https://www.txdmv.gov/sites/default/...iles/130-U.pdf
https://www.txdmv.gov/sites/default/...les/14-317.pdf

Depending on which Tx county, she might be able to go onto their webpage ( county tax office) and make appointment to submit paperwork & fees instead of waiting in line for hours - highly advisable.

Be sure to take both forms, Title, Tx inspection receipt, proof of insurance, & ID.

Thank you, this is very helpful. Let me digest it all and come back here if I have any questions!

Just wanted to report back and let you know that everything went like clockwork yesterday. I had made an appointment in advance (online) at the Travis Country Tax Assessor office. When my relative & I showed up and checked in using the link provided, we got called before our given appointment time. The person handling our issue was polite and got us our title transfer and plates quickly!

Thanks again for laying out the process.
