My wife and I are looking at moving to Killeen and teaching for the Killeen Independent School District. I'd like to hear from Killeen area residents about what's good and bad about the area. If you want extra credit, tell me what areas and schools I should aim to avoid... and what areas / schools are the best! All information will be greatly appreciated.

I notice no one is answering. Use the search function and look at Killeen, Ft. Hood, Nolanville, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove. You will get lots of information on the Killeen area.

I may have shared some of this with you before. I have a brother-in-law who taught at Killeen Ellison High School for about 10 years. He was quite content with his teaching situation there. I think the demographics have changed as the city has grown and new schools have opened, however. My sister-in-law still teaches there and likes it. My former assistant principal in Abilene is now a principal at a new middle school in Killeen. We keep in close contact, and he also seems pleased with the system. I will try to find out his school and send you a private message with his name and school so you can contact him if you wish.

There are very nice schools in Killeen with a new one opening every 2 or 3 years. I have been a substitute teacher here for 7 years now in all the schools from pre-k thru 12th grade. Of course Harker Heights H. S. is the nicest high school but it is further out but still apart of KISD. You have to keep in mind that this is a military town with a large turnover in staff. It can be hard on students when their principal leaves in the middle of the school year, so a lot of the high school students walk around with a "whatever" or "I'm just here for now" attitude. Killeen is too small to name school names but incidents have happened at all of the middle and high schools but that doesn't make them bad schools.
