Hello all! I am going to be moving to Tennessee soon, and i am kind of concerned about what I'm reading about the crime rates. Does anyone have any input on that? Also, any recommendations on the safest, nice places to live would be helpful. I dont have alot of money, but can spend about 200,000 on a home. Thank you so much!

Could you be a little more specific about where in TN you plan to live? The answers to your questions would vary tremendously from one area of the state to another....

As JoeCartpath said, you really need to provide us with more information. Do you need a job? Entertainment? Do you want to live in town or out in the country? How big of a house do you need?

I've lived in six different places in Tennessee, and Cookeville is by far my favorite. It's a small city/big town. $200k doesn't go as far as it used to, but you can still get a nice place out in the country. And, unlike most other places in Tennessee, you can still have lightning fast gigabit internet out in the country around Cookeville. I'm 25 miles outside of town and have gigabit internet at my little farm. It's awesome. And I'm less than an hour to Nashville (Cookeville itself is a smidgeon over an hour from Nashville). I'm surrounded by gorgeous nature, lakes, waterfalls, and super friendly people. In the 7 years I've lived here, I've seen a law enforcement car in my area just once, and that was because of a wreck.

Here's a sampling of homes less than $200k that have sold in the Cookeville area in the last few weeks.

To the OP, we absolutely love it here in TN. We had (unfortunately) moved to the Asheville, NC area first and had an incredibly bad experience there. It’s a nice place to visit but horrible place to live. More like a smaller, dirty version of Chattanooga with a lot of homelessness and crime.

Jumped “over the hill” into TN and landed here in Erwin, TN and will probably stay here forever. Homes here can be found for under $150k with gigabit fiber internet to the home. All of the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounds us as does the Cherokee National Forest.

We frequently spend our weekends in the higher elevations (6,500’+) surrounding Roan Mountain, TN and Boone, NC and have endless creeks and beautiful Watauga Lake close by. There’s also whitewater rafting 10 minutes from town on the pristine Nolichuckey River and a 150 acre mountain bike park in the works.

It’s a great option to enjoy small town living with the “larger city” amenities of Johnson City (15 minutes) and Asheville (40 minutes) close by. We frequently leave our windows open and doors unlocked here and have no issues doing so.

Absolutely love Erwin if you can tell! Plan on visiting Cookeville in the next few weeks on our way over to Nashville. Hope this helps and good luck!
