My husband and I are moving to Tennessee. I’m feeling a call to check out Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Eastern Tennessee, and am looking for areas in particular we should be checking out. We plan on taking a trip out there in early November.

We love the outdoors, I love mountains, forests (pine trees in particular) and streams, and we want to have a half-acre or so to grow our own food and have some chickens for eggs. I dream of being surrounded by trees. My husband works in IT, so having fast internet is important, and job growth in the area is preferred for potential resale value in case we decide to move. We are looking for somewhere safe, quiet, clean, and 10 minutes or so from town, with lots of access to outdoor activities. My in-laws live in/around Clarksville. I’m more artsy, but the politics of where we are have us literally running for the hills! Looking for a quieter place to set up our new homestead and build a life together. We’re in our early thirties, so somewhere with good schools and opportunities for potential kids would be important as well.

I found this thread to be particularly helpful:

Chattanooga vs Knoxville vs Tri-Cities vs Clarksville

Are there any places in Chattanooga/Knoxville/Eastern Tennessee that would be of interest to check out?

TIA

The rural areas outside of Cookeville have gigabit internet which is not something most rural areas around here have. I live 25 miles outside of town and have lightning fast internet at my house. It's wonderful. Within 40 minutes of Cookeville are over 100 waterfalls, 1200 miles of lakeshore, and a dozen or so state parks. Putnam County has excellent schools and is very family friendly. The area is growing rapidly and is only an hour from the Nashville airport. It'll also put you only 2.5 or so hours from Clarksville.

Cookeville itself has become quite artsy with several galleries downtown, the huge Appalachian Center for Craft (run by the local university) overlooking a large lake outside of town, and an annual art crawl that features over 40 local artists and galleries.

Here's a sampling of houses that I think match your description that have recently sold within a few minutes of Cookeville to give you an idea what the area is like. Remember that even though some of these houses are in very rural areas, they still have gigabit internet.
