Hello all!

My family and I are looking into moving from no season having Florida to Tennessee! We want a small town that has an ACTIVE community. We love town/area festivals and such, especially during Fall. We also want acreage. Nothing crazy, but not the cookie cutter neighborhood lot. We prefer central or east, but open to all options!

Also. My husband is Native American and I'm White, so going to need a town that is okay with that as a whole. Shouldn't have to mention it, but we have issues here in NW Florida, so just figured I'd toss it out there.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

I'm sure others will give their opinions, and regulars won't be surprised at my recommendation: Cookeville. It's an hour east of Nashville and is in a beautiful area. It definitely matches your criteria. There are lots of us ex Floridians here (I'm from Tampa).

It's a very family friendly town with excellent schools, a children's library, children's museum, free outdoor summer movies and concerts, and an award-winning children's theater. There are lots of community festivals, including what was the largest fireworks show in the state for the 4th of July. The biggest festival is in the fall.

Not only are the schools excellent, the entire county is one open school district, meaning you can live anywhere in the county and send your kids to any school of your choice as long as there's room and you provide the transportation. It's one of just 5 school districts in the state to offer the International Baccalaureate Program at both the middle and high school levels.

Cookeville is home to the state's flagship technological university, so it attracts people from all over the world. No worries about people treating you differently because your husband is Native American. In fact, one of the county's biggest festivals is a Native American festival in Monterey in the eastern end of the county. Another perk to having a tech university in town is internet connection: there's gigabit internet available not just in town but even out in the boonies outside of town. I'm 25 miles outside of town and have gigabit internet at my house. It's awesome.

You didn't mention jobs, but Cookeville has had one of the fastest growing economies in the state for several years now. Being only an hour from Nashville, which is the state's economic engine, certainly helps.

There are 1200 miles of lake shoreline, 100+ waterfalls, and a dozen state parks within 40 minutes of town. Here are samples of homes that have recently sold out in the countryside around town to give you an idea what the area is like:

Cookeville definitely comes to mind. Probably one of the best places in the entire Upper-South region as far as community pride goes. It is on the up and up when it comes to growth and is right on I-40 so it gives easy weekend trips to Nashville, Knoxville, and Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg.

Sewanee is a highly scenic area in the Southern Cumberland Plateau with a small university that may be of interest. That area is very rural so keep that in mind. It isn't too far from Chattanooga. There may be smaller towns or suburbs of Chattanooga that may fit as well.
