This popped up on my Facebook feed this morning. Using the percentage of adults without a high school diploma and the percentage of high school students who don't graduate, a group studied all 97 Tennessee cities with at least 5,000 people to determine which cities are the "dumbest."

Here are the top 20 smartest cities (note how many are Memphis suburbs):
  1. Germantown
  2. Brentwood
  3. Arlington
  4. Lakeland
  5. Oakland
  6. Bartlett
  7. Atoka
  8. Collierville
  9. Mount Juliet
  10. Greenbrier
  11. Collegedale
  12. Hendersonville
  13. Spring Hill
  14. Maryville
  15. Murfreesboro
  16. Millington
  17. Clarksville
  18. Franklin
  19. Cookeville
  20. La Vergne

On the other end:

97. La Follette
96. Rockwood
95. McMinnville
94. Covington
93. Sparta
92. Springfield
91. Hartsville
90. Bristol
89. Savannah
88. Sevierville
87. Shelbyville
86. Fayetteville
85. Greeneville
84. Jonesborough
83. Kingston
82. Lewisburg
81. Morristown
80. Gallatin
79. Dyersburg
78. Memphis

I saw on Fox 17 the other night that Springfield school officials say the info this list is based on is inaccurate, and they showed stats to prove it:

Top 10 Dumbest Cities, Not So Says City Leaders | News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | WZTV

The problem is that the website says they looked at the grad rates for "the entire population," not current rates, which doesn't really reflect the quality of education or trends.

Roadsnacks.net, which says their site is meant to be "infotainment," is known for their clickbait lists such as "Most Ghetto," "Most Redneck," "Snobbiest," and "Drunkest" cities, based on "the number of available places to buy booze, and by how often people are talking about drinking."

I spent 21 years in Tennessee and loved the state and it was economically very good to me.

That being said, an article concerning the 'smartest' anything in Tennessee gave me a chuckle. The lower end of the list forgot to included Difficult, TN. The bulbs were not the brightest thereabouts. But the beauty abounds.

But I wouldn't change my time there for anything.

Yes, it's always nice when someone stops by from Elsewhere to "chuckle" at us.

This list isn't about the current quality of education, but the education level attained by the entire population. Therefore, it has to include the entire population, not just those under a certain age. I do agree, though, that this list shouldn't be taken too seriously since obviously the lack of a high school diploma does not automatically make one "dumb" any more than having a high school diploma automatically makes one "smart." Nonetheless, this list pretty much mirrors what many of us in this board have been saying about where the best schools in the state are.

I too would be more interested in a list that didn't include the entire adult population. A lot of the oldsters around here don't have a HS diploma, mostly because of economic reasons rather than being 'too dumb' to finish school.

Not to mention that that "back in the day" an 8th grade education was probably the equivalent of a 12th grade education today.

Not to mention that a LOT of people who were educated elsewhere have moved to Middle TN in the past 25 years.

I'm certainly not trying to say we're all valedictorians, but given those criteria even I would have thought that Tullahoma, near Arnold AFB, would have ranked higher than some of those cities.

Agreed. Same with Oak Ridge.

I have read several other so called surveys by that website "Roadsnacks.net" and have found them to as a whole not to be very accurate at all. Some of them are down right foolish in my opinion. That said I do believe that this particular survey probably is reasonably accurate based on the total adult population. Most of the cities near the top of this list are higher income towns. Big surprise. Of course the education level will most likely be higher there. When ever looking at any of these so called surveys you have to take a lot of the information in them with a grain of salt.
