I'm considering to move to Syracuse. Which areas of Syracuse are nice and safe? I've seen very affordable properties (below 50k) for sale online, are they in good neighborhoods?
If you want a decent house in a decent neighborhood the city of Syracuse, you'll have to go up into at least in the mid $70,000 range. Here are some: CNYHomes - Detailed House Listing Information for
I'd also check out this listing in Fayetteville - Syracuse's most affluent suburb. The original price of $70,000 was just lowered to $57,000. Although the house is on a main road and across from a major shopping center, it is located in a very safe area and in one of the region's top school districts (if that is a consideration).

Just remember that this is NY... the taxes can easily be close to the mortgage payments. The taxes on that $57K house are $3571 and taxes go up a bit each year. Right now, you'd be making mortgage payments of about $275/mo. and tax payments of nearly $300. Plus homeowner's insurance. (I'd say that would break down to about $50-$75/mo.) 148 North Burdick St, Manlius, NY 13104 - Prudential CNY Realty
Mortgage brokers take into account the mortgage payment AND taxes when calculating what you can afford. Don't go for just the house price... you need to find out the taxes for each house. The lower the taxes, the nicer house you can buy.
Try looking in 13210, 13206, and 13057. Good luck!
The homes listed by Bellafinzi I'm guessing are tiny, fixer-uppers, or HUD homes. There aren't really any "shady neighborhoods" in those areas.
A typical older home price in the older burbs is $100-$120K for a Cape Cod or an expanded ranch.
