Basically, the area needs to build new housing at a higher pace. Especially given the Micron announcement, even though, it really has needed to build more units that aren't just Downtown, geared towards college students or some suburban developments here and there.

Yes.

The county should make this a priority. If nothing changes then it could make homes unaffordable to Syracuse Area natives.

Not just Onondaga County, but parts of Oswego and Madison counties close to Onondaga County as well, given that they are a part of the Syracuse MSA. Even Cayuga County, which is in the Syracuse CSA.

I’m curious what the ranking would be if all 384 metropolitan areas were on the list.

This also touches on the need for more housing in the area.

How to fix the housing shortage in the Syracuse area plan

1. Expand water and sewer lines all over the northern half of Onondaga County

2. Give incentives for new home developers from Buffalo, Rochester and Albany to enter the Syracuse area market for a couple years.

3. Have the county Buy hundreds of acres of land and make it shovel ready for new home construction, sell it back to developers for a reasonable price.

4. Put in New roads, sidewalks sewer and water lines in places that can support a walkable neighborhood.

5. Reach out to national home builders to expand in the area.

6. Focus on building new housing developments in high vibe areas like Lysander, Van Buren South of 690, Manilus area between Pompey and Cazenovia, near Eldridge, Camillus west of the village, Onondaga Hill, Brewerton, Cicero near south Bay road, Skaneateles, Marcellus and around Great Northern Mall on Route 31 in Clay.

7. Start widening roads like in the town of Onondaga to handle the future traffic from the future thousands of new homes.

The thing is that a lot of the new building has done most of this. The lack of infill and options in more walkable areas is something that really needs to be addressed, whether in the city, villages that can handle it(Solvay, East Syracuse, Minoa, etc.) or even older suburban communities like Mattydale, Nedrow, Lyncourt, Lakeland, (etc.).

I think there does need to be more sidewalk infrastructure in the suburbs and the thing to consider is that the area, while it needs updated infrastructure like most areas do to some degree, was built out to hold more people than it does now.

Problem is that other than the small villages of Liverpool, Skaneateles and Fayetteville living in a single family house in a walkable safe, attractive, high vibe community with good schools is limited in Onondaga County.

Build new ones in Bridgeport, Brewerton, near Onondaga community college, Eldridge, Jordan and three rivers.

Onondaga County leadership should be thinking like Carmel Indiana. Grand scale stuff with impressive architecture. Go big or people won't want to live there.

Great northern mall redevelopment is impressive and will attract people because it looks great. Do the same all over Onondaga County.

Again, the bolded is a very subjective view. Marcellus, Cazenovia, Baldwinsville, Tully and Manlius are some other area villages with walkability and good schools.

Jordan and Elbridge are two villages in a more rural setting; while Bridgeport and Brewerton may work, but are also further out.

Carmel is essentially a large planned community city within Clay Township in Hamilton County just outside of Indianapolis. You already have Radisson in the town of Lysander and given what I mentioned in the Baldwinsville/Lysander thread, you could actually just build the Radisson Community out to the the initial plans that HUD had for that and other communities: https://www.city-data.com/forum/66779356-post92.html

You can or would have to infill in terms of a business district, but the point is that you already have communities in place where you can use existing infrastructure or at least enhance what is already in place.
