It is still pretty underrated within the area, but seems to be slowly, but steadily catching on. It fits everything you are looking for, as it is minutes from Skaneateles to the SW and Syracuse is minutes away to the E/NE. SUNY Upstate's Community General Hospital on Onondaga Hill is the closest hospital. It also is minutes from Auburn, which is a smaller city with an improving Downtown and has some events, historical sites/museums, professional theater, etc. Otisco, Skaneateles and Owasco Lakes in the eastern Finger Lakes are also minutes away.
Are you looking for something that is in between Norwich and Syracuse? If so, then you may like places such as Cazenovia and Hamilton. Both are nice, quaint villages with small colleges(Cazenovia College in Cazenovia and Colgate University in Hamilton). Hamilton also has a small hospital: https://www.communitymemorial.org/ , while Cazenovia is near this medical center in Fayetteville: https://www.upstate.edu/directions/eastmd.php (closest actual hospital is in Syracuse about 25 minutes away)
This village right across the Oswego River from Onondaga County, not too far from plenty of big box shopping in Route 31 and about 25 minutes NW of Syracuse appears to have multiple homes within the budget: Village of Phoenix, NY
Thanks! We need to spend under $100,000... preferably around $80K, since we anticipate having to put a fair amount of work into something that inexpensive. I know it might be a stretch. This will largely be for just me and my husband with occasional visits from an adult child, so a 2/1 would be fine for us (though a 2/2 or a 3/2 would be better!).
Given the area you are roughly looking in, here are some listings in the Sherburne-Earlville, which straddles the Madison/Chenango County line and in between Norwich to the south and Hamilton to the north. Hamilton is in the Syracuse metro area and has some shopping, with Norwich having a bit more in that regard, village of Earlville: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...0&from=map-pin https://www.google.com/maps/@42.7369...l=en&entry=ttu

There is a Tops Supermarket in the western edge of the village, in a plaza next to the Yellow Brick Road Casino. It is a short drive to shopping/medical facilities/restaurants in Fayetteville, Green Lakes State Park, the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, Sylvan Beach, Turning Stone Casino/Resort, Cazenovia to the south and Oneida Lake, among other things.
It is home to the International Boxing Hall of Fame, minutes from Sylvan Beach, the Abolitionist Hall of Fame in Peterboro, Turning Stone is close by, has Thruway access to either Syracuse or Utica and more. It also has a Tops and is a short drive to shopping in Oneida, which also has a hospital.
