From the article: " People claiming Ukrainian ancestry are more heavily concentrated in Upstate New York communities than just about anywhere in the entire U.S.
Syracuse, Utica-Rome and Auburn stand out as leaders among all of those places.
The Syracuse and Utica-Rome areas are tied for the lead among all New York metros with over 200,000 people for Ukrainians per 1,000 at 10.68.
The two regions are tied for fourth nationwide in Ukrainians per 1,000 among similar metros. They lead hundreds of other places across the country.
That means that while other places in Upstate, downstate New York and the rest of the U.S. have larger Ukrainian populations by sheer size, the concentration is more intense in the Syracuse area. You’re probably more likely here to run into a Ukrainian at your kid’s basketball game, the grocery store or just walking down the street."
For metros nationally with at least 200,000 people Syracuse and Utica-Rome are tied for 4th in terms of rate.
Also..."Just west of Syracuse, the Auburn area is second among more than 900 metro and micropolitan areas in the U.S. for Ukrainians per 1,000 at 23.82. Only Sedalia, Missouri is ahead.
In that bigger group that includes small and mid-size cities, Syracuse is tied with Utica-Rome at 13th nationwide for Ukrainians per 1,000.
Like Ukrainian communities around the world, those in Upstate New York are grappling with the reality of the Russian invasion taking places thousands of miles away. Many of the Ukrainians here have friends and family still in the country.
Syracuse.com analyzed the Ukrainian population in Upstate New York and the rest of the state and nation using 2019 Census Bureau estimates. The numbers show that Ukrainians are deeply rooted in communities throughout New York and especially in Upstate.
New York leads the nation in total Ukrainian population, in large part because of big numbers in New York City. But Ukrainians account for much bigger shares of the total populations in numerous Upstate New York communities."
In terms of other Upstate NY areas, Hudson is 5th nationally, Elmira is 9th and Amsterdam is 10th out of 900 micro/metro areas. Syracuse and Utica-Rome are tied for 13th/14th, Rochester is 15th and Binghamton is 20th.
